Internews’ Earth Journalism Network (EJN) invites applications from media outlets in Nepal to create new programs or expand reporting on natural resource management and green growth. These seed grants aim to strengthen public awareness, improve accountability, and influence policy through investigative and solutions-focused journalism.

This funding is part of the Media for Inclusive Green Growth in Nepal (MIGG) project and EJN’s Asia–Pacific project, supported by the European Union and Sida.

Background

Nepal faces increasing disasters from unplanned development and the unregulated exploitation of natural resources. Climate-induced hazards — such as drought in the Terai, glacial lake outburst floods in Rasuwa, Limi Valley, and Thame, and flooding in Sudurpaschim — are mounting challenges. Studies project Nepal could lose up to 2.2% of its annual GDP to climate change impacts by 2050.

Following the 2015 constitution, Nepal adopted federalism, delegating resource management to federal, provincial, and local levels. While this brought opportunities for decentralization, it also led to overlapping responsibilities, policy contradictions, and intergovernmental disputes.

To address these governance challenges and promote sustainable use of rivers, agricultural land, forests, mines, rangeland, and mountains, stronger media coverage is essential.
